Truck racing is a form of competition involving modified heavy tractor units on racing courses. This sport was very successful when it started in Europe more than twenty five years ago, but saw a decline in popularity by the 90's. However, recent years have brought a renewed interest in truck racing, with the auspice of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). Speed and weight limits are in place for safety reasons, and are 100 mph and 5500 kg respectively. Even though truck racing is not a contact competition, mild collisions do take place due to the size of the vehicles. Trucks can compete in two different classes, but all drivers must have a license issued by the Motor Sports Association.
Some of the most important truck racing competitions in the world are the FIA European Truck Racing Championship and the Formula Truck, a Brazilian motorsport series. Well known race truck manufacturers include ERF, Foden, Iveco, MAN AG, Renault Trucks, Scammel, Scania AB and Volvo.
