Truck racing is one of the fastest growing sectors of automobile competition in the United States. With origins going back to a start in Europe, the current incarnation of truck racing pits modified tractor units against each other to see which teams have the best machines and fastest drivers. The truck racing events are now drawing record crowds and industry experts think that the fanbase for the major circuits will only increase in the next few years. There are some differences between the traditional car racing that explains the growth in popularity.
One factor is the machines. Instead of lighter cars, the trucks give a different racing experience, with plenty of power and control to spotlight the abilities of the drivers. These trucks are raced at the same tracks as the more popular cars, but often feature less laps that need to be driven. The result is that the races take less time and are more capable of holding the audience’s attention for the duration of the event. The average length of the professional truck racing events is 200 laps, but there are events that have as little as 100 laps or as many as 250. The majority of the truck racing tracks are found in the southeastern United States, but recent expansion of the series has seen new events at locations in Nevada, California, and New Hampshire.
In addition to the larger commercialized truck racing events, there are many smaller events that happen in locations around the country. While they do not have the same level of sponsorship and national attention, these races can feature exciting drivers that are working their up the ladder to eventually turn professional. In addition, visiting one of these events can give an intimate setting, with fans able to meet and greet other people with similar interests from the surrounding community.
